Minister Nash to meet with Sky Muster retailers

11 July 2017

  • Minister Nash to meet with Sky Muster retailers to discuss higher data allowances
  • Sky Muster users set to receive 50 per cent more peak data and twice as much off-peak data from October
  • Sky Muster had 90 per cent less outages this April than last September

Minister for Regional Communications Fiona Nash will meet with Sky Muster satellite retailers on Thursday to discuss huge increases in data allowances announced recently.

Minister Nash will discuss potential plans with retailers who provide NBN Sky Muster services.

The increase in data announced by Minister Nash a fortnight ago is likely to see users receive 50 per cent more data at peak times, which should see 100 gigabyte a month plans offered by retailers.

'It's important for me to get the perspective of retailers and get a feel for the plans they're likely to offer,' Minister Nash said.

'I'll also raise the issue of business plans to be offered in the future, as well as how retailers are looking after distance education students and remote schools.

'NBN is offering this extra data at no extra cost to the retailers, so I'm keen to see savings passed on to customers.

'An extra 35 gigabytes of data would allow students to watch an additional 30 hours of university lectures each month, or businesses to conduct an extra 50 hours of teleconferencing with clients or colleagues.

'Sky Muster satellite customers have already seen improvements to the service with outages down 90 per cent in June 2017 compared to September 2016. This is due to the combined hard work of the Government and NBN Co.'

'I am looking forward to working with retailers and users on continued to improvements to the Sky Muster service for customers,' Minister Nash said.

Sky Muster is an ultra-modern satellite made to deliver high-speed internet to up to four per cent of Australian homes and businesses, mostly in remote areas.
