Melbourne — final countdown to digital-only TV has begun!
21 November 2013
The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP
Minister for Communications
Melbourne and surrounding areas will switch to digital-only television at 9am on 10 December 2013.
To continue to watch free-to-air television after this date, you need to be digital ready.
The Melbourne switchover region includes Kilmore, Sorrento, Wonthaggi and Warragul, with over 1.7 million households making the switch.
At 30 September, 95 per cent of households had converted to digital television. Just like previous switchovers, many more people are expected to convert as the switchover day draws near.
If you haven't yet switched from analog to digital television, don't put it off any longer. Converting to digital television involves adding a digital set-top box or digital recorder to each analog TV or replacing your analog television with a new television that has a built-in digital tuner.
Assistance is still available to help make the switch. You may be eligible for the Household Assistance Scheme if you have not yet converted your working television to digital, and receive the full rate of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, Department of Veterans' Affairs Service Pension or DVA Income Support Supplement.
Over 34,000 households across Melbourne have converted to digital television with assistance from the Scheme. To your check eligibility, contact the Department of Human Services on 1800 556 443.
More information about the digital switchover is available on the Digital Ready website at digitalready.gov.au or by calling the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13.
By the end of the Melbourne switchover day, all analog free-to-air television signals will have been turned off and Australian television will be digital-only.
This will be the culmination of work commenced in 2001 which has involved industry, government and the community working in partnership to deliver a better quality television service for all Australians.
