The Hon Anthony Roberts MP

Federal Minister for Communications Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield today joined the NSW Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, the Hon Anthony Roberts MP, to launch a new fibre optic technology at Prysmian's manufacturing facility in Dee Why.

'Today's launch is a great example of innovation in the telecommunications industry, leading to new product offerings and greater efficiencies, which will ultimately improve outcomes for consumers', Minister Fifield said.

'The Coalition Government is committed to using the most appropriate technology to deliver the nbn sooner and at least cost to taxpayers and we welcome the development of new product offerings in the industry.

'The nbn rollout is ramping up in New South Wales with more than 603,000 homes and businesses now able to order an nbn service and nearly 260,000 homes and businesses already connected', Minister Fifield said.

'We are pleased Prysmian has based its leading-edge manufacturing facility in New South Wales and is focused on the local manufacturing of cabling for the NBN multi-technology mix rollout', Minister Roberts said.

There are currently more than 870,000 users active on the network nationwide and nbn is on track to meet this year's rollout forecasts and to have the network completed in 2020.

To date, Prysmian has supplied more than five million kilometres of fibre optic cable to the nbn, helping the distribution network to reach more than one million premises.

Prysmian's new FlexTube fibre optic cable is designed to be easier to handle and install, helping to lower the cost and increase the speed of building telecommunications networks.

Prysmian is a global manufacturer of electric power transmission and telecommunications cables and systems. In 2015, Prysmian was awarded NBN Supplier of the Year.
