Support for Australia to exhibit at Venice Architecture Biennale

The Turnbull Government has announced $150,000 to support Australia’s exhibition at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale from 26 May.

Minister for the Arts, Senator Mitch Fifield, said the Government is committed to supporting Australia’s creative industries to grow their international presence and foster new talent.

“Australia’s participation in the Biennale will showcase our world class architectural talent, engage us in a global conversation around the future shape of the built environment and help to establish international partnerships and trade opportunities, which are vital to driving our creative economy.”

“More than 108,000 people visited the Australian Pavilion at the 2016 Biennale. This year’s showcase, Repair, will again present a distinctly Australian creative vision to a large international audience and build on our previous successes.”

Repair is a living installation, housed in the award-winning Australian Pavilion in Venice, which was designed by Australian architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall for the Australia Council. Repair focuses on architecture that integrates built and natural systems and will feature special lights and 65 species of Western Plains Grassland plants from Victoria.

Architects Mauro Baracco and Louise Wright will work with artist Linda Tegg and a team of supporting architects, landscape architects, urban designers and ecologists to bring the display to life.

Australia’s exhibition will be open to the public for six months and is presented by the Australian Institute of Architects, which has a focus on promoting quality, responsible and sustainable design. The Venice Biennale has a reputation as the most prestigious celebration of art and architecture in the world. This is the seventh time Australia will participate.
